Our National Debtline service has reported unprecedented demand for its services at the start of 2026, with new data showing the highest number of monthly calls in our history. This surge reflects the ongoing pressure on people’s finances – and a growing willingness to seek help as Debt Awareness Week begins.
We received 26,500 calls in January, setting a new record for a single month. This was surpassed almost immediately as February saw 27,400 calls – a 3% rise. That is a marked change from typical seasonal patterns, with demand typically dropping after January. In 2025, for example, calls received fell by around 12% between January and February.
While we continue to see high levels of demand, our latest data also highlights how effective early, free advice can be. The majority of people who seek help with us see meaningful and rapid improvements to their financial position. More than half of people (57%) reduce their debt by over £1,000 within six weeks of getting in touch, with a significant proportion achieving even larger reductions.
The ongoing situation in the Middle East has increased worries about the cost of living, with people relying on heating oil most impacted in the immediate term, while mortgage rates have also risen again.
Steve Vaid, Chief Executive at Money Advice Trust, said:
“These record call numbers show just how tough the start of 2026 has been for many people. Month after month, households are wrestling with high costs– and that is reflected in the huge demand for our help.
“But there is a positive story here too. The demand for our service indicates that more people are now coming to us earlier, recognising that taking that first step can make a real difference. Debt Awareness Week is a reminder that no one should wait until things reach crisis point.
“We know that debt advice works. At National Debtline, nine in ten people who come to us see their debt situation reduce or stabilise after speaking to us. If you’re worried about your finances, we want you to know that help is out there and it can put you back in control.”
This Debt Awareness Week, we are urging anyone struggling with their finances to seek free, confidential advice as early as possible via nationaldebtline.org.
