Over a third of people helped by National Debtline in energy arrears as Price Cap rises

Ofgem has announced that its energy price cap will rise to £1,755 from 1st October 2025, an increase of 2% percent on the current level.

Steve Vaid, Chief Executive at Money Advice Trust, the charity that runs National Debtline, says:

"Even this small increase in the energy price cap will come as another blow to households already struggling with the impact of the high cost of living. For the people we help at National Debtline, the reality of this is stark – 34% of people who get in touch are already in energy arrears, making it the second most common debt type we see.

“Behind these figures are people struggling to afford the basics, which may, in the coming months, force them to make impossible choices between keeping the lights on, heating their homes, and paying the bills.

“Low-income households need more support from policy makers. Introducing an energy social tariff would go a long way in reducing bills for the poorest households.

“Anyone worried about their energy or other bills should contact National Debtline as soon as possible – don't wait for debts to build up.
