Debt Relief Orders remain at record levels as charity urges people to seek advice

National Debtline responds to latest personal insolvency figures.

Posted September 20, 2024

Debt Relief Order registrations have remained at record levels, according to new figures published by the Insolvency Service showing personal insolvencies in August were 16 percent higher than in August 2023 at 10,000.

In April and June this year eligibility for Debt Relief Orders was extended by the removal of the £90 fee and other changes. Debt Relief Orders can offer debt write-off for people on low incomes, with minimal or no assets.

Since April 2024, Debt Relief Order (DRO) registrations have remained at the highest level since their introduction – with DRO registrations in August 2024 nearly double the long-term monthly average.

Leading debt advice charity, National Debtline, is urging anyone struggling with their bills to contact National Debtline for free, independent advice.

Matt Hartley, Director of Engagement at the Money Advice Trust, the charity that runs National Debtline, said:

“High Debt Relief Order registration levels show no sign of abating soon, as households continue to struggle with unaffordable debts.

“While the welcome removal of the £90 fee for DROs has led to an increase in registrations, the record levels we’re now seeing also reflect the significant need for debt help as the impact of cost of living pressures continue to hit households

“Seeking free, expert debt advice is the best first step anyone worried about their finances can take. National Debtline is here to help, with free, independent advice from our expert advisers.”
