The Office for National Statistics has published its latest Consumer Prices Index, which shows the rate of inflation stood at 2.2 percent in the 12 months to August, the same rate as July 2024.
Leading debt advice charity, National Debtline, has responded calling for urgent support for struggling households as energy costs are set to rise by 9.5% from October.
Steve Vaid, chief executive of the Money Advice Trust, the charity that runs National Debtline, said:
“Inflation levels may have stayed the same, but prices are still high and there is little respite for those households struggling to cover essential costs. Many people are now facing unaffordable debts and getting back on track will be near impossible without support.
“And with winter round the corner, and energy costs set to rise further, the pressure is only set to mount.
“Ensuring people on the lowest incomes have the support they need to get through the winter should be a priority for this Government. This needs to include helping households with unmanageable energy debts through a Help to Repay scheme.
