The Money Advice Trust was delighted to be awarded Debt Advice Provider of the Year at the Credit & Collections Industry Awards last night. The award celebrated the difference the charity’s debt advice services, National Debtline and Business Debtline, make to people in financial difficulty – with 9 in 10 people helped by the charity reporting their debts reduced or stabilised as a result, and 3 in 4 seeing a positive impact on their emotional or mental health.
The award comes after the charity’s busiest year to date, in which they provided more than 6 million minutes of debt advice to households and small business owners, across more than 271,000 advice interactions.
The award also recognised the charity’s contribution in helping to improve outcomes for people in debt more widely, through their training and influencing work. In 2024, the Money Advice Trust trained more than 2,700 advisers from 800 free debt advice agencies, with 98% saying they now felt better at helping people with their debt problems and 99% said that outcomes for the people they supported improved.
The charity also led the successful Help to Repay campaign, which galvanised Ofgem into announcing a dedicated scheme to help households struggling to repay energy debt. The proposed scheme delivers on proposals originally put forward by the Money Advice Trust, to offer debt write-off and repayment matching, and could lift more than 1.8 million households out of energy arrears.
Steve Vaid, Chief Executive at Money Advice Trust, says: “We’re delighted to have won Debt Advice Provider of the Year. Since I joined the Money Advice Trust just over a year ago, I have been continually struck by the dedication and expertise of our people, and this award is a testament to the hard work they put in day-in, day-out to give the best possible support to people in financial difficulty.
“We often hear from people that they’ve been able to sleep for the first time in months, after speaking to us, or they can finally concentrate again at work. These are the life-changing impacts that debt advice can have. But we know that many people are still facing huge financial pressure, so it’s vital we continue working alongside our partners to be there for all those who need us, and to prevent financial difficulty occurring in the first place.”
