National Debtline responds to Ofgem’s plans to ‘reset and reform’ energy debt

Ofgem plans follow charity's Help to Repay campaign

Posted October 30, 2025

Ofgem has today (30th October) announced plans to tackle historic energy debt. This follows sustained campaigning by National Debtline through its Help to Repay campaign, calling for a scheme to support households struggling with unmanageable energy arrears.

Grace Brownfield, Head of Influencing and Communications at National Debtline, said:

“Energy debt is the second most common issue we help people with – and with prices still high, many are trapped in debt they can’t repay. Our ‘Help to Repay’ campaign called for action, so we welcome Ofgem’s plans. But unless bills are made affordable, this scheme will be fighting a rising tide. The Chancellor must act at the Budget to ease the pressure on low-income households.”
